Powderology:
Explore the possibilities of personal expression with this underused form of glass in a hands on, fun, experimental atmosphere. Working with small components, students practice a variety of techniques unique to glass powders, including color blending and shading for painting, sgrafitto, combing and feathering, line work, resists, templates, faux sandblasting, and how to pull out oversifted powder. Students will also discover how to correct a problem, after it has been fired. Design and color issues will be discussed and practiced. Students will take home a set of samples to remember the techniques allowing them to easily replicate this work in their own studio.

Glass Clay: CLAY PLAY WITH GLASS POWDERS: An Innovative Pâte de Verre Method
Learn how to mix powdered glass into a paste, similar to clay, then sculpt it into a variety of small forms that can be used for jewelry, magnets, or architectural applications. We’ll start with powder wafers to heat things up, then using a non-toxic liquid binder, you’ll discover the secrets of a very unique method. Applying modified polymer clay techniques to our paste we can achieve similar results that in the past were only relevant to clay or could only be achieved using molds. We’ll also make small paste pattern bars with intricate detail, that can be used as cabochons, buttons, beads, or components in other projects. From this class, you’ll take home a finished small sculpture and as many paste pattern bar projects as one day allows.

Color Theory for Glassists
Using color can be simple or complex but it’s an essential part of designing our glass projects. If we understand HOW we’re using it, our projects become more sophisticated. Color can inspire all the senses. Use color to express your intention, emotion, and concept. Wet media artists can mix colors but that’s not always an option for those of us working with glass. In this class you’ll learn color theory as it relates to sheet and powdered glass. We’ll cover contrasts, complements, and chroma as well as triads, tertiaries and more. Learn how to understand and place color to it’s fullest potential. In the morning we’ll begin with wet media to develop your personal color charts based on your palette. The afternoon will be spent applying color theory to glass.

Design 101: The Basics
Design is visual language. The more visually literate we are, the easier it will be to use design fundamentals in our studio glass. In this class you will develop a good visual vocabulary, and practice using it with specific design exercises. We’ll discuss the principles and elements of design; what they are, what they mean and why they’re important. While working with black and white you’ll discover the meaning and emotion behind certain shapes and colors and how to put them to work for you. Learn about formal and informal balance; how to develop tension or serenity, different types of perspective and how to put it all together into a composition. Approach your next project with visual intelligence after attending this fast-paced, introductory level class.

Shimmer Shine and Sparkle
Create a visual feast while learning to use colorful mica powders, liquid gold, iridescent glass, Dicro Slide and other fun glitzy products in imaginative ways. Whether you like maximum glitter or a subtle sparkle here and there, take this class to experiment, play, study and create while learning all about glitteratzi. We’ll make jewelry sized components in class so you can turn your creations into dazzling wearable art, magnets, or simply glue them onto a sample board to post on your studio wall for reference. You can make each component a different design using different techniques; or you may choose to coordinate numerous components to form matching sets of earrings, pendants and bracelets. We’ll mix mica with powdered glass, use it straight and clear cap it to see various results. Liquid gold will be hand drawn onto glass so bring a simple image to copy or use instructor’s examples. Dicro Slide will be discussed and used, so if you have a favorite paper punch, bring it. All that glitters may not be gold, but it’s all fun to play with! Join us in this sparkly class full of visual pleasure.

Basic Kilnforming, Glass Fusing for Beginners
(photo coming soon)
Want to try it yourself? Glass fusing is the joining of glass together by heat, also called Kilnforming. It is one of the most versatile ways of working with glass today. Join us in this comprehensive, fun filled, hands on, exciting class. No experience is necessary and you don’t have to be an artist! Each week spotlights a different project with new techniques and kiln processes to learn.
Beginners will make a series of sample tiles or coasters; jewelry and small components for magnets, drawer pulls, etc.; a small functional bowl, vase or plate, and a bas relief art piece. Learn the basics of glass cutting, placement and firing while receiving extensive information on the technical aspects of kilnwork, safety, and studio set up. If you’ve taken the class in the past, you’re welcome to come back for a refresher course!
**Instructor will have tools available to purchase in class, reasonably priced for students, as well as a few tools to be shared. Please wear safety glasses and closed toed shoes.

Glass Fusing for Intermediates
(photo coming soon)
The returning student will determine class projects based on level of experience. Please contact instructor prior to first week of class to plan first project & discuss supplies. Processes will include, but not be limited to developing a clean edge on finished pieces; drilling holes in glass; different dimensions in tack fusing; multiple firings; positive/negative bas relief; inclusions such as copper, brass, mica, and dichroic, thicker work including blocks and frit casting with fiber paper. Further explorations based on individual concerns will be addressed.

Build A Better Pocket
Have you wanted to make a wall pocket vase but not been able to figure them out? Are you interested in going beyond the traditional rectangle shape and want to learn how? Learn how to draft a design, execute it in glass and finish the vase so it’s a clean-edged beautiful piece you can be proud of. You’ll concentrate more on the design and fabrication of the vase rather than ‘adorning’ it, but we’ll have a bit of fun with color, dichro slide, stringers, bas relief; and if you choose, powders for decoration as well. Pockets will be picked up and finished the following day.

Beautiful Butterflies
Butterflies are symbolic, beautiful, and elusive creatures. Learn to design original glass butterflies from your imagination or create exact replicas from photographs. Used to brighten your garden, home decor, or gift giving, these delightful creations will be made individually and each will be unique. We’ll use glass powders for a painterly approach and copper wire antenna as a built in hanging device. Butterflies will be picked up the following morning.
