Steider Studios.FFF ShowCard

Two weeks from tonight ‘Fine Feathered Friends’ opens at Columbia Arts in Hood River, Oregon.  The artists reception is from 6 until 9pm on First Friday, March 6th.  Hope you’ll join us to see the work of 15 artists inspired by our theme ‘Fine Feathered Friends’.

Steider Studios.Great Horned Owl.2.17.15

My favorite bird shots will be on display and for sale at the show.  My other favorites (because I have too many) are available to purchase as soon as I get them listed in my shop!  Or if you can’t wait, you can always let me know what you like and I’ll order it for you!!

Steider Studios.Sunrise.2.18.15Until then I’m entertaining & inspiring myself by getting outdoors.  I love nature and the Columbia River Gorge has been ever so beautiful lately.

Steider Studios.White Heron in Sunlight.2.18.15-2

Here are a few of my favorites from this last week or so.  Went back to find the leucistic Great Blue Heron just after sunrise.

Steider Studios.Hummer.Resting.Bingen.Marina.2.15.15

Saw my first Hummingbird of the year at Bingen Marina!

Steider Studios.Swan Fight.Bingen.Marina.2.15.15

Also watched a little Swan action at Bingen Marina.

Steider Studios.Night Heron.HR Marina.2.14.15Finally got a good shot of a Night Heron at Hood River Marina.

Steider Studios.Conboy.2.19.15-6

Parked under this Red-tailed Hawk in Glenwood.

Steider Studios.Conboy.2.19.15

Gazed at Conboy Lake on the refuge for a while on a beautiful blue-sky day.

Steider Studios.Robin at Conboy.2.19.15

Followed a herd of Robins at Conboy National Wildlife Refuge.  Yep, it was a herd.

Steider Studios.Canal at Conboy.2.19.15

More Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge gazing on a misty morning.

Steider Studios.American White Pelican.2.17.15

Watched an American White Pelican bathing in the Deschutes River.

And more…..but that’s enough for now.  Don’t forget, come to my opening, First Friday at Columbia Arts in Hood River!!

Steider Studios.Lost Lake.1.26.15

January has been crazy busy driving up and down the Columbia River chasing Eagles and Herons with an occasional foray to Conboy and Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuges.  Today I drove above the cloud/haze/inversion to grab some vitamin D in the form of SUNSHINE at Lost Lake!

Steider Studios.Otter.Lost Lake.1.26.15-2

What a special surprise to capture this lone Otter fishing.  The lake had a layer of ice, so the Otter had to break through the ice to surface with his prize.  In this photo, you can see chunks of ice near his ‘elbow’ as he munches on his catch.

Steider Studios.Otter.Lost Lake.1.26.15

With each ‘catch’, he climbed onto the ice and ate, then dove back for more.

Steider Studios.Otter.Lost Lake.1.26.15-3

Is this a crawfish he’s eating?  It was so quiet on the lake, he didn’t notice us until we went crashing through the brush, trying to keep up with him as he swam away.

Steider Studios.Forest Experimental Motion Blur

I’m making a big effort to really learn my camera better and use it to its fullest potential.  In that light, I had a little fun with some experimental ‘blurred motion’ shots of the gorgeous surrounding forest before we left.

Steider Studios.Bald Eagle Looking at Me.Balfour.1.20.15

The pictures I haven’t shown you between my last post and this one (because I’ve run from one adventure to the next with no stops between) are on my Facebook Page, ‘Steider Studios’.  I try to post a daily photo of what I am lucky to see here in the Gorge, or regionally on the occasions when I leave my mountain top.

Many more fun events are coming up.

Sunday, Feb 1st is the group ‘bird walk’.  We may go to the Maryhill or Columbia Hills area – let me know if you want to join us & I’ll let you know where & when to meet.

Feb 12 – 15 I’ll be in Klamath Falls for Winter Wings Festival, photographing everything I see while I’m there!

Sunday, March 1st is another group bird walk.

Steider Studios.Sand Hill Crane.Dance.Sauvie.1.23.15

First Friday, March 6th my show, “Fine Feathered Friends” opens at Columbia Arts and runs through March 30th.  Co-curator Robin Panzer and I have put together a fabulous month of events for your enjoyment in addition to 16 artists presenting their artwork!  Many of our artists will demonstrate their process during the month and we’ll have an interactive display on loan from Conboy National Wildlife Refuge.  On Mar 7th come see Raptors, live in the theater at Columbia Arts!  Mar 14 you can paint a birdhouse in the studio.  Mar 21st, enjoy a fashion show of feathery tattoos and a tattoo demonstration.  Mar 28 join us for a short hike up the Hood River stairs into an older neighborhood to see and learn about our resident birds with field biologist, Cathy Flick.

I keep thinking I’ll have plenty of time to tell you everything, but when the sun is out or eagles are flying, or an opportunity for fun presents itself….I’m going out to play!  Maybe I’ll see you out there!!

Steider Studios: Sunset yellow.2.28.14

I am way behind, so instead of panicking I’ll just relive the last sunset of February.  I was cooped up all last week  with my computer, CreativeLive and Photoshop trying to learn new tricks.  At the end of the last session on Friday I had to… no, needed to hike down my mountain for fresh air, green forest and hopefully a sunset.  So thrilled I caught the last sunset of February just before March stormed in.

Steider Studios: Sunset Sky.2.28.14

On Sunday, in spite of the March storm I went to the Yard Garden & Patio show with my friend Kathy.  We were so desperate for spring that we braved icy snowy conditions on Interstate 84.  We cruised at a steady 35 to 40 mph & arrived in Portland in time for a fabulous Lebanese lunch and the show.  Our trip home was not as pleasant with a 10-15 mph cruising speed crawling on bumpy washboard ice caused by semi trucks chained up.  I confess that was better than the alternative – skating off the road like some of the abandoned cars we saw.

Steider Studios: Sunset 2.28.14

Now I’m back in the throes of getting ready for my annual studio sale. and working with Gorge Artists Open Studios for next month’s self-guided tour of 40 artist’s studios.  I always wonder if people will venture way up here to my spot on top of Burdoin Mountain to see (and purchase!) my glass & photography.  If you’re so inclined, you can download a pdf of our map from our website onto your iPad (I think it would work on other reading devices too)!

Steider Studios: Sunset.2.28.14

In preparation this year we have THREE venues showing a preview of our work!

Tomorrow night, Thursday March 6th is the opening reception for The Dalles Art Center Preview Show.  From 5 until 7pm you will meet many of our artists – I hope you can make the opening.

We’ll also have a Preview Show in the lobby of Columbia Art Gallery with an opening First Friday, March 7th from 6 until 8 pm.  Most of us will be there to talk about our work & we’d love to see you there.

Trash-2-Art Gallery Show at Columbia Arts

I also have work in the gallery portion of Columbia Art Gallery for the Trash to Art Show during the month of March.  I’ll be hanging out between the lobby area and the gallery for the reception of both shows on First Friday.

If that weren’t enough, the White Salmon Windows project is featuring participating studio tour artists downtown for the month of March.  So, 40 artists have work spread throughout the gorge hoping to tempt you to come to our studios in April!

I’ll post more information about my studio sale closer to the event & hopefully will have something interesting to post between now & then!!  As always, I’m ever so grateful that you took a moment to visit with me!!

Next on my calendar is a mini-solo show at ‘The Nook’ at Columbia Arts.  It will open March 1st, in addition to work I’m submitting for the ‘Gorge Artists Open Studios Preview’ at Columbia Art Gallery with 29 other artists.

Steider Studios: Textured with Green Dichro, Long

This just in, my jewelry is included in an article, ‘Top Jewelry Trends’ in Glossi Magazine!

April will be a killer month with an event each weekend, beginning with the Glass Craft & Bead Expo in Las Vegas – although my classes are not filling this year, so I may not get to go.  My open studio sale is the second weekend, followed by ‘Artists of the Gorge’, a weekend art show at Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River!  The last weekend in April is the largest show of my year, ‘Glass Gallery’ in Portland at the Convention Center.  The Gathering of the Guilds is the largest event of its kind on the West Coast and is always a must see.  If at all possible, plan to spend a couple of days perusing all the fabulous art at this show.  There is so much to see, so many artists and media that you’ll want to take home one of everything!

You will find my nature photographs above published as all occasion greeting cards in my Zibbet shop. Just click this link.

Birds and The Blues

January 12, 2013

Steider Studios: Heron Perched Near The Dalles Dam

I’ve been working hard for an upcoming show at Columbia Art Gallery:  The Blues.  The opening is Feb 1st from 6pm until 8pm.  Many local gorge artists are participating and the opening reception will include a rare acoustic performance by local blues greats, Tess & Patrik Barr!

Steider Studios: Heron in Flight

Today I decided to take a day off to go looking for eagles again.  The Dalles Dam is a magnet for eagles this time of year.  While I looked around, several herons flew by & I was thrilled when this one landed so close to me !

Steider Studios: Eagles at The Dalles DamAs you can see, my lens does not reach the eagles across the Columbia River from The Dalles Dam Visitor Center!  I couldn’t figure out how to enter the facility to get a closer shot – all the gates were closed and I’ve never seen them open.  This was just one section, there were plenty of eagles if only I could figure out how to get closer!

Steider Studios: Klickitat River 1.12.13

Lucky for me I’d stopped at the Klickitat River enroute to The Dalles.  This time I hiked along the east side of the river.

Steider Studios: Pine Siskin at Klickitat River

Maybe it’s the time of year, but I wonder if I’ve ever seen a pine siskin so bright.

Steider Studios: Flicker at Klickitat River

Flickers were abundant!  I haven’t seen this many in one spot, ever.

Steider Studios: Eagle in TreeI didn’t think my camera caught this eagle with all the branches in my way.  I only saw two eagles at the Klickitat River today, both in the same tree.  It was interesting viewing them from the opposite side.  I know there must be a way to get closer and will investigate next time.

Steider Studios: Columbia River Gorge from Skyline 1.12.13

I made it back to White Salmon just in time for sunset.  Tomorrow I’d better get back to the studio.  My water line to the flat lap is frozen, so I have to figure out how I’m going to coldwork my pieces for the show next month!  See you at the reception?

I’ve spent the last few days of May uploading items into my Zibbet shop.  Mostly wall-pocket vases, but also a couple garden fairies and earrings.  I haven’t put a dent in the amount of work I have here that needs to be photographed and written about, then loaded into my shop.  I plan to use my non-garden-worthy days this summer to accomplish that task.

Most of the end of May was spent putting my cabin back together after back to back studio sale weekends….well, almost.  There’s much still to do, but I’ve got the major tasks accomplished.  We can toss the dog toys again, so it’s back to normal living.  And I can get back to work!  I have a couple interesting orders waiting on my workbench.  And I need to make more bracelets!

This last week I’ve been talking with a couple of studios about teaching.  Confirmed is Palmer Alaska at the beginning of August.  Yes, it’s true, I’ll be teaching for Half Moon Creek again.  How I love that studio/gallery and the ladies who own it.  Let me count the ways by sharing (again) my class from last summer in this post.  (Just in case you missed it the first time).

I love Alaska and can’t wait to go back!  I’ll be teaching Powderology again plus my ‘Build a Better Pocket’ class.  I think the classes will fill fast, so if you’re interested in joining me in Alaska (and I do hope you are), better contact Half Moon Creek soon!  I promise you’ll have a spectacular time!

Welcome to Palmer Alaska

June 25th will be the one year anniversary since I launched Steider Studios Glass Medium™.  I plan to have a follow up blog post showcasing how you are using it. I have a few photos that some of you sent me, and will be posting them unless I hear otherwise. If you’re using my medium, I want you to send me a photo or two for sharing – with links to your sites. Yes all your sites, I’ll promote you with wild abandon!

Whether you call it ‘glass clay’ or ‘glass paste’, I’ve seen some amazing work that’s being done with it & can’t wait to share it with you.  Send your photo(s) to me at:  Linda at SteiderStudios dot com.  Thank you!!

Most of you know that BECon is happening mid June and I’d been on the fence over whether to go or not.  I was looking forward to getting together with friends coming in from all over the world while they were here in Portland, only an hour and a half from where I live.  Alas, Granny decided for me that I definitely wont’ be there.  She wanted to rest eternally next to Grandpa in Rose Hills and as it happens Rose Hills was booked until mid June.

Lastly, I’d like to invite you to a gallery show I’m participating in, ‘Get Centered‘ at  Columbia Arts in Hood River.  The reception is this First Friday, June 3rd from 6 to 8pm and runs through the 26th.  It’s a celebration of Columbia Arts’ first five years in the current space.  Some fascinating work was delivered today, don’t miss it!
