Steider Studios: Sunset yellow.2.28.14

I am way behind, so instead of panicking I’ll just relive the last sunset of February.  I was cooped up all last week  with my computer, CreativeLive and Photoshop trying to learn new tricks.  At the end of the last session on Friday I had to… no, needed to hike down my mountain for fresh air, green forest and hopefully a sunset.  So thrilled I caught the last sunset of February just before March stormed in.

Steider Studios: Sunset Sky.2.28.14

On Sunday, in spite of the March storm I went to the Yard Garden & Patio show with my friend Kathy.  We were so desperate for spring that we braved icy snowy conditions on Interstate 84.  We cruised at a steady 35 to 40 mph & arrived in Portland in time for a fabulous Lebanese lunch and the show.  Our trip home was not as pleasant with a 10-15 mph cruising speed crawling on bumpy washboard ice caused by semi trucks chained up.  I confess that was better than the alternative – skating off the road like some of the abandoned cars we saw.

Now I’m back in the throes of getting ready for my annual studio sale. and working with Gorge Artists Open Studios for next month’s self-guided tour of 40 artist’s studios.  I always wonder if people will venture way up here to my spot on top of Burdoin Mountain to see (and purchase!) my glass & photography.  If you’re so inclined, you can download a pdf of our map from our website onto your iPad (I think it would work on other reading devices too)!

Steider Studios: Sunset.2.28.14

In preparation this year we have THREE venues showing a preview of our work!

Tomorrow night, Thursday March 6th is the opening reception for The Dalles Art Center Preview Show.  From 5 until 7pm you will meet many of our artists – I hope you can make the opening.

We’ll also have a Preview Show in the lobby of Columbia Art Gallery with an opening First Friday, March 7th from 6 until 8 pm.  Most of us will be there to talk about our work & we’d love to see you there.

Trash-2-Art Gallery Show at Columbia Arts

I also have work in the gallery portion of Columbia Art Gallery for the Trash to Art Show during the month of March.  I’ll be hanging out between the lobby area and the gallery for the reception of both shows on First Friday.

If that weren’t enough, the White Salmon Windows project is featuring participating studio tour artists downtown for the month of March.  So, 40 artists have work spread throughout the gorge hoping to tempt you to come to our studios in April!

I’ll post more information about my studio sale closer to the event & hopefully will have something interesting to post between now & then!!  As always, I’m ever so grateful that you took a moment to visit with me!!

A Magical January Sunset

January 4, 2014

Steider Studios: Columbia River Gorge Magical Sunset

What a magical start to 2014!  I was giddy with excitement as I watched the colors in the sky changing on the second evening of January.  Overlooking the Columbia River Gorge watching the mist hovering over the river as the mountains darkened and the skies turned into a painting.

Steider Studios.Sunset.1.2.14

No matter where I turned my camera an amazing array of color mixed with golden clouds.  Cars were stopping on the road, all the neighbors were out staring at the sky in amazement.

Steider Studios: Sunset on Mt. Hood. 1.2.14

Mt Hood with a brilliant red cloud curling over her snowy white cap was the last bit of color to fill my soul.

Steider Studios: Kingfisher in Flight. 1.2.14

The day had a magical start when I found a Kingfisher & caught him in flight!

Steider Studios: Hawk in Flight. 12.31.13

The last day of 2013 I caught this juvenile Red-tailed hawk in flight.  Today I entered him in a Project FeederWatch contest.  Do me a favor and vote for my photo:  Simply click this link and vote for my hawk in flight.  Thanks!!  You only have until tomorrow night (Sunday, Jan 5th) to vote!!!

2014 is off to a wonderful start!  I can’t wait to see what’s next!!

Steider Studios: Trout Lake Creek. 10.18.13

We’ve had a fantastic fall, full of warm days and cool evenings that bring out fall colors in our foliage.  I went up to Trout Lake to photograph Mt. Adams reflected in the lake; but actually think the above shot, Trout Lake Creek is my best for that day.

Steider Studios: Fall Color on Mt. Adams. 10.18.13

Into Gifford Pinchot National Forest on Mt. Adams, I think I missed the best show of fall by a week but still caught some color.

Steider Studios: Mt. Adams over Trout Lake. 10.18.13

My take on this classic shot.  I think I’ll go back for sunrise and sunset tries over the next few seasons and see what I can come up with.

Steider Studios: Red Leaves

Heading back down the mountain, I stopped at Conboy National Wildlife Refuge but saw no wildlife.  The leaves were mostly past prime there also.

Steider Studios; Mushrooms.10.27.13

I did see mushrooms.  All kinds and colors!

Steider Studios: Red Mushrooms. 10.27.13

Until now I’ve never seen a mushroom as red as this one!

Steider Studios: Golden Sunset 10.9.13

Not taken on the same day, but a good ending for this post, I caught this magnificent golden autumn sunset over the Columbia River Gorge.  I’ve probably said it too many times but I am so lucky to live here!!

You can see many of my photographs published as all occasion greeting cards in my Zibbet shop.

Do you feel a change in the air?

Birds and The Blues

January 12, 2013

Steider Studios: Heron Perched Near The Dalles Dam

I’ve been working hard for an upcoming show at Columbia Art Gallery:  The Blues.  The opening is Feb 1st from 6pm until 8pm.  Many local gorge artists are participating and the opening reception will include a rare acoustic performance by local blues greats, Tess & Patrik Barr!

Steider Studios: Heron in Flight

Today I decided to take a day off to go looking for eagles again.  The Dalles Dam is a magnet for eagles this time of year.  While I looked around, several herons flew by & I was thrilled when this one landed so close to me !

Steider Studios: Eagles at The Dalles DamAs you can see, my lens does not reach the eagles across the Columbia River from The Dalles Dam Visitor Center!  I couldn’t figure out how to enter the facility to get a closer shot – all the gates were closed and I’ve never seen them open.  This was just one section, there were plenty of eagles if only I could figure out how to get closer!

Steider Studios: Klickitat River 1.12.13

Lucky for me I’d stopped at the Klickitat River enroute to The Dalles.  This time I hiked along the east side of the river.

Steider Studios: Pine Siskin at Klickitat River

Maybe it’s the time of year, but I wonder if I’ve ever seen a pine siskin so bright.

Steider Studios: Flicker at Klickitat River

Flickers were abundant!  I haven’t seen this many in one spot, ever.

Steider Studios: Eagle in TreeI didn’t think my camera caught this eagle with all the branches in my way.  I only saw two eagles at the Klickitat River today, both in the same tree.  It was interesting viewing them from the opposite side.  I know there must be a way to get closer and will investigate next time.

Steider Studios: Columbia River Gorge from Skyline 1.12.13

I made it back to White Salmon just in time for sunset.  Tomorrow I’d better get back to the studio.  My water line to the flat lap is frozen, so I have to figure out how I’m going to coldwork my pieces for the show next month!  See you at the reception?

A wildfire broke out near my studio on 9.5.12.  We’ve been anxiously watching its progress.

Today we are thrilled to learn its 40% contained.   Dry grass, steep terrain and heat made it difficult for fire fighters.

Fire crews from all over the NW came to help and we are so grateful.

My studio was never in danger as the fire is about 4 miles away but directly on the route we drive into town.

At this time, most evacuees have returned home and no structures are damaged.

Smoke drifted to Goldendale WA, Portland OR, and all points between.

Thanks for enjoying tonight’s sunset with me.  Smokey skies do make a gorgeous sunset, but we’ll be happy to have our clear skies back.

March Madness

March 13, 2011

In the midst of Japan’s tragic earthquake and tsunami, the rest of us must continue moving forward.  My heart is heavy for all those who lost loved ones so I’m participating in several small ways to help those left behind.

I bought a couple raffle tickets to help a japanese potter & his village rebuild through Heath Ceramics in Sausalito. Only $10 and you might win the limited edition Commune Canister hand thrown at Heath Ceramics worth $500. You only have until Monday, March 14th, so hurry!

Here’s an easy way everyone can help. Send in the dogs! One click on the ‘like’ button & you’ve added $1 to the campaign without using your own $1. It’s a Facebook page called ‘Dog Bless You’. I hope you’ll ‘like’ it.

As I find more creative ways to help, I’ll post them on my Facebook page.  Please check there when you have a chance to see if I’ve discovered anything else.  My friend, Karen posted this list of projects already set up by the Red Cross, Medical Corps, Save the Children, and more that need funding for Japan.

As for my studio moving forward in the aftermath, I don’t think I’ve ever had a busier March!  New venues and fresh work set up in my regular shops.  This past week I dropped off new work for Hood River Jewelers.  The display isn’t finished because it will be moved in front of the window in a few days (btw, the large blue, white & black platter isn’t mine but we left it in the display).  If you’re in Hood River, please visit  Chris, Julie and Theresa and let them know I sent you!

Each March I prepare for the Glass Craft and Bead Expo by packing & shipping about a dozen boxes.  Filled with tools, examples, and supplies the majority of boxes are 16″ cube and weigh about 30 pounds.  Yes, 30.  It’s how I prepare for my gardening season!

Deciding what to take and what to leave is never easy for me.  I want to expose students to as much as possible in our short time together!  I think my Build a Better Pocket class is almost full.

There’s still plenty of room in my Beautiful Butterflies class.  Maybe I can entice you to take it?  If you couldn’t get into my Exploring Glass Powders class, I’ll cover many of the same principles in this class.

Play Date with Paste is filling, but it’s the first day of the Expo on Wednesday and many of you won’t arrive until Friday.  Taking any of my classes or not, I hope you’ll stop in my classroom to say ‘hi’.  Later in the afternoon is best because the students (my priority) will be well on their way by then.

A last note on the quake.   This link, from the NY Times, shows photos before and after the disaster.  Use the sliders to see satellite images of each town before and after.

Edit: This link for Mashable shows 7 ways to help or donate using social media.
